Excerpt from An'yu Oyama's dossier in the Themis Database of the Methuselah, circa 2063:

"Every aspect of An’yu’s personality and every action he takes are defined by his beliefs, and his beliefs are solidly centered on the main law of nature: that strength determines everything, and one only deserves to live if one decides to be strong. While this used to manifest in a self-destructive tendency to compromise all things, including other people, in pursuit of whatever might happen to make him better than the rest, this drive now keeps An’yu in line. This change in direction can be attributed to Lily’s disappearance – An’yu’s first real wounding, given the fact that he alone could take responsibility for it – and the way he retraced the footsteps of Saitou Oyama, his grandfather, by doing Saitou’s Pilgrimage all over again.

An’yu is stable now because the passing of the years and the many things he has done have made him perfectly aware of his strengths and weaknesses, his limitations both as a human being and as an Alchemist. He is one of those rare individuals who is attuned to what he believes to be his place in the larger picture of things."
